IGNITE Challenge Tanzania 1.0 is a 10-month initiative implemented by StartHub Africa in Tanzania in partnership with the World Food Programme.
The program focuses on identifying, accelerating, and supporting high-potential Tanzanian businesses developing nutrition and water-efficiency solutions that strengthen sustainable food systems and serve humanitarian and institutional contexts including refugees, host communities, and schools.
The IGNITE Challenge Tanzania 1.0 is open to legally registered Tanzanian businesses operating in any of the two solution areas: Water Solutions-for-Food-Production or Complementary Foods for Children aged 6–59 months.
Eligibility is based on the specific solution area your business addresses.
This area is for businesses ready to produce a Ready-to-Use Food Supplement formula developed by the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Center (TFNC) and Sokoine University of Agriculture. The product is designed to address acute malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in children. Applicants are not required to develop a new product, as the formula has already passed acceptability and sensory tests
Interested businesses must possess food processing equipment capable of producing at least 1.5 metric tons per day, including an industrial mixer and extruder (or equivalent).
This area targets businesses operating within the water-for-food production space. This includes irrigation efficiency, rainwater harvesting, water storage and purification for food preparation, and agricultural water recycling, but not limited to others.
Businesses must have been operational for at least 1 year as of the application date, OR 2 years in a related field (agriculture, water management, or engineering).

No. The Ready-to-Use Food Supplements formulation has already undergone technical and nutritional validation to ensure compliance with required standards. . The focus is on quality production and scaling.
However, branding, packaging, and minor flavor improvements may be adjusted, as long as the nutritional composition is not compromised.
What costs can the grant funding cover?
The grant funding is intended to support pilot implementation and business growth activities. This may include prototyping, field testing, operational costs.
Do I need a production facility?
Yes. Applicants must operate a licensed food production facility, additional certifications related to food safety and quality assurance may be required prior to pilot production, including proper processing space and storage for raw materials and finished products.

What if we have strong capacity but limited working capital?

If a solution is not purely "water-focused," is the business still eligible?
Yes. Eligibility is open to businesses where water access or water-use efficiency is a key component of the business model and contributes meaningfully to food production outcomes.
Why is there an emphasis on "school settings" for hardware or digital deployment?
WFP works extensively with School Feeding programs, where school kitchen gardens play a critical role in diversifying food baskets and solving malnutrition for children. The Challenge seeks solutions that can be piloted in these environments to ensure students have access to fresh, nutritious food grown on-site.
Is it possible to apply with just an idea?
The Challenge primarily targets validated concepts and existing solutions with demonstrated market traction and proven revenue. Applicants with over two years of experience in a related field, such as agriculture, and a clear pivot plan for a water-related solution are also encouraged to apply. Previous experience in running a business within the agricultural ecosystem is highly valued.
Is being based outside of Kigoma a problem?
Operating outside of Kigoma is not a problem. WFP and its partners will provide technical support to help tailor solutions to the local context, including facilitating access to host community sites or camps and providing logistical guidance during the pilot phase. However, SMEs should clearly demonstrate that their solution is practical, adaptable, and applicable within the Kigoma context.
Is the $40,000 funding a grant or an equity investment?
The funding of up to $40,000 is a non-dilutive catalytic grant (equity-free). This capital is intended to cover pilot costs during the challenge period, allowing for the scaling of a solution without the loss of business ownership.
