As the world grapples with feeding a growing population, the need for creative agricultural approaches has never been more urgent. In this blog, we explore how one of the program’s participants is leveraging organic fertilizers and pesticides to contribute to food security in rural communities.

Innocent Byamukama’s inspiration to join the Innovate for Food Security program stems from his personal experience growing up in a rural village, where he witnessed the severe impacts of hunger. “I’ve seen real hunger,” Innocent recalls. “I felt a strong urge to find a solution that could help my community produce food sustainably.”

Innocent Byamukama during the pitch day event at Gulu University

Reflecting on his time during the 5-day ideation, Innocent highlights the significance of exploring multiple ideas. “My most memorable experience was having the opportunity to brainstorm various business concepts. The ideation opened my mind to new possibilities,” he explains.

The 3-day bootcamp provided Innocent with the clarity needed to focus on his best idea. “During the bootcamp, I had to narrow down my options from the many ideas I generated during the ideation. It helped me refine my concept for organic fertilizers,” he shares.

The 8-week coaching and mentorship program had a profound impact on Innocent’s approach to entrepreneurship. “The mentorship was incredibly helpful. We were given ample time to connect with potential customers and gather feedback on our products,” he says. This hands-on approach allowed Innocent to better understand the needs of farmers in his community.

                                   Samples of Innocent’s products:

Innocent’s venture aims to combat food insecurity by promoting the use of organic fertilizers, which can improve soil health and increase crop yields. “Our organic fertilizers are making a difference. By helping farmers produce more, we are contributing to food security in Gulu and surrounding areas,” he affirms.

After the Pitch Day event, Innocent is determined to take his business to the next level. “There’s another challenge ahead, and I’m ready to face it,” he says. His next steps involve conducting further research to improve his products and expand his customer base in Gulu.

Innocent is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Innovate for Food Security program. “StartHub Africa has played a crucial role in shaping my entrepreneurial journey. This program has changed the way I view entrepreneurship, especially within the agricultural sector,” he concludes.

The Innovate for Food Security program empowers young entrepreneurs to tackle the pressing issue of food insecurity through innovative and sustainable solutions.
