Empowering Refugee Youth through Digital Skills

In the digital age, the power of online work offers new possibilities, especially for marginalized communities. The Online Gig Work Program has been a transformative force in the lives of many, including Daniela Kengeta, a young Congolese woman who has been living as a refugee in Uganda’s Nakivale settlement for several years. This program provided her with the skills to thrive in the digital economy, helping her discover a new pathway to empowerment. 

Daniela first heard about the program from a close friend, Ruphin Kungwa. Intrigued by the potential to earn an income while expanding her skills, she applied, viewing it as a personal opportunity and a way to uplift her community. “I saw it as more than just earning money,” Daniela shared. “It was a way to connect with the world beyond the refugee camp and create opportunities for others.” 

Once enrolled, Daniela focused on social media marketing, learning how to promote businesses online, expand her reach, and connect with clients. The program also offered her crucial lessons in networking and building a professional online presence. “Before the program, I didn’t know how to create a professional profile or write proposals,” Daniela explained. “Now I can present myself confidently to potential clients.”

Despite initial setbacks, including difficulties with her first gig due to incomplete information, Daniela remained determined. The training helped her overcome these obstacles, and she soon began working on other online opportunities. “The challenges I faced made me more resilient,” she said. “They pushed me to keep looking for better opportunities.” 

Today, Daniela combines her online gigs with a project she’s passionate about—Youth Building Bridges for Peace. The initiative empowers young people in Uganda, helping them understand their rights and potential. Daniela believes that many young refugees lack the knowledge and platforms to express themselves, making them vulnerable to manipulation. Through her project, she’s determined to create a safe space where youth can develop their skills and raise their voices. 

The skills Daniela gained from the Online Gig Work Program have also helped her share her work with a broader audience, attracting support and sparking conversations. “Social media marketing has given me a voice,” she said. “I can now promote my work and connect with people who want to support our cause.”One of Daniela’s most significant achievements has been expanding her skills in digital marketing and professional writing. She’s now using these skills to support her dream of starting an organization to help young refugee girls in Uganda. “I want to teach them skills like making reusable sanitary pads,” Daniela shared. “My goal is to help these girls become self-reliant and less vulnerable to exploitation.”

She hopes her organization will grow into a national movement, advocating for young girls’ rights and fighting against domestic violence. “I want to break the cycle of poverty and dependency,” she said. “By empowering these girls, we can change the future.” 

Daniela’s journey through the Online Gig Work Program has been life-changing. It opened doors to new opportunities and broadened her vision of what’s possible. “Being a refugee is just a name; it doesn’t define your future,” she said. “The gig work program gave me the tools to build a better tomorrow. I hope other young people take advantage of such opportunities.” 

Her message to fellow refugees is simple but powerful: “Don’t wait for tomorrow. Start building your future today.” 

Through her determination, resilience, and newfound digital skills, Daniela has shown that with the right support, refugees can thrive in the modern world. Her story is a testament to the power of digital empowerment and the transformative potential of the Online Gig Work Program.

From the Refugee Camp to the Digital World

In today’s interconnected world, digital tools transform how people work, connect, and contribute to their communities. This digital revolution opened doors to new opportunities for Rolande Ansiima, a young refugee from Congo living in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, this digital revolution opened doors to new opportunities. From her deep passion for permaculture to her drive to make a difference in her community, Rolande embraced the potential of gig work. With limited access to resources and battling the challenges of camp life, she embarked on a journey to learn digital skills that could change her future, one gig at a time. 

Rolande Ansiima resides in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement Camp, in Kashojwa. Despite the tough conditions of life in the camp, she has always been dedicated to making a difference in her community. Before joining the gig work program, Rolande was passionate about permaculture, a sustainable farming method, and was actively involved in community development and education. She viewed these activities as powerful tools to help others and improve her surroundings.

It was through a friend, who was also a trainer, that Rolande first heard about the gig work program. Intrigued by the idea of earning an income while connecting with others needing her skills, she saw it as a way to further her impact. “I believed the program would help me financially and allow me to share my skills and knowledge on a larger scale,” she reflects. However, she quickly realized that the road ahead would be challenging. 

As one of the first participants in the program, Rolande encountered numerous obstacles. With little experience in digital tools, she initially found it hard to keep up. Power outages and unreliable internet were frequent issues in Nakivale, further slowing down her progress. “The constant delays were frustrating, but I was determined to push through,” she recalls. 

Despite these setbacks, Rolande’s perseverance shone through. Trainers patiently guided her and others through digital platforms like Upwork and Koraborate, vital for finding gig work. “They took us step by step, ensuring that we learned at our own pace,” Rolande shares. Slowly but surely, she became more comfortable with these tools, gaining the confidence she needed to explore new opportunities. 

Rolande’s journey wasn’t just about her success. “Our experiences allowed the program organizers to refine the training for future participants, making the process smoother for others,” she says with pride. 

A major milestone in Rolande’s journey came when she landed her first gig in graphic design. She was hired by a Ugandan travel agency to create their company profile. “It felt like a big step forward, confirmation that these skills could open new doors,” she says. Using her own laptop, Rolande completed the project with great effort and enthusiasm. 

Unfortunately, despite her hard work, she did not receive payment or feedback from the client. This was a difficult experience, but rather than give up, Rolande took it as a lesson. “I realized that gig work could be unpredictable. I needed to be resilient and patient,” she reflects. She remained committed to improving her skills and seeking more opportunities, understanding that the path to success would not always be smooth. 

Rolande’s journey didn’t stop at the gig work. She continued to pursue her passion for permaculture and education, launching personal projects focused on sustainable farming and teaching environmentally friendly practices. She also became involved with a local community-based organization (CBO), using her graphic design skills to create posters and materials for events and fundraising. “This work gave me a sense of purpose and strengthened my role as a community leader,” she says. 

The digital skills Rolande gained during her gig work training became invaluable in these endeavours. “I became better at communicating with others, managing my time, and organizing projects—skills that were useful not only in my gig work but also in my everyday life and work with the CBO,” she explains. 

Even with the progress she made, Rolande continued to face challenges. The excitement of landing her first gig was tempered by the lack of payment, underscoring the uncertainties of freelance work. The ongoing issues with power and internet access in the camp also made it difficult to consistently find and complete gigs. 

However, Rolande’s optimism remained unshaken. She focused on her long-term goals of growing her CBO into a larger charity and expanding her community’s access to sustainable farming practices. “I believe that with continued effort and perseverance, I can overcome these obstacles and achieve my dreams,” she asserts.

Rolande’s story is a testament to the empowering potential of gig work, even in challenging environments like refugee camps. Her journey highlights the importance of determination, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. It also underscores the power of community support and working together to achieve common goals. 

As she continues to navigate the complexities of gig work and community service, Rolande remains committed to using her skills and experiences to help others. “My journey shows that with the right opportunities and a strong will, it is possible to create positive change—even in difficult circumstances,” she says.

From Ideation to Impact: Driving Food Security Through Innovation

In a world where food insecurity and climate change pose significant challenges to communities, innovative solutions in agriculture have become critical. Anyango Robinah, a fourth-year student at Gulu University, is tackling this issue head-on through her entrepreneurial venture in beef processing. With a passion for improving food security and fostering sustainable agricultural practices, Robinah joined the Innovate For Food Security (I4FS) program  spearheaded by StartHub Africa and Ennovate Ventures in partnership with NOREC. Her journey represents the potential for young innovators to drive change in the fight against hunger and environmental degradation. 

Robinah’s passion for food security began long before she joined the Innovate For Food Security program. “I was already involved in a business focused on food security,” she shares, “and I saw that StartHub Africa empowers students to tackle these issues. I wanted to deepen my understanding of how business works, and I realized StartHub would be my best choice.” Robinah’s decision to join the program was driven by her desire to gain more knowledge and to find ways her venture could make a broader impact on food security. 

The five-day ideathon was a game-changer for Robinah. One of the most memorable experiences was the “50K Challenge,” where participants had to come up with a business idea that could be executed within two hours using only 50,000 UGX. “This exercise made me realize that even with a small amount of capital, you can start a business and grow it over time,” she recalls. The challenge also introduced Robinah to practical tools for business planning, such as creating flyers and using a business model canvas. “It taught me that small beginnings can lead to big results,” she says.

Following the ideathon, the three-day bootcamp provided Robinah with a deeper understanding of how to refine her business model. “The bootcamp was crucial in helping me focus on market research and the business model canvas,” she notes. During this phase, she learned more about customer behavior and how to strategically build a sales funnel. “I gained insights into how to attract and retain customers, which made me feel more confident about scaling my business,” she adds. 

The eight-week coaching, and mentorship phase transformed Robinah’s entrepreneurial mindset. “The mentorship taught me the importance of project planning, record keeping, and tracking my tasks,” she explains. This structured approach has allowed her to think long-term about her business and plan for future growth. “I now know how to plan ahead for what I want to achieve, and that has made a big difference in how I manage my venture,” she says. The coaching has also helped her fine-tune her operational strategies, making her business more efficient and sustainable. 

Robinah’s beef processing business is directly contributing to the fight against food insecurity by ensuring access to affordable and sustainable food sources. “We’re promoting economic access to food by producing high-quality beef with minimal input costs,” she explains. Additionally, her venture emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices, reducing reliance on fossil fuels by using electricity and solar power for production. “We encourage farmers to grow more crops and plant trees, particularly for zero-grazing systems. This not only boosts food security but also helps mitigate climate change,” she says, highlighting the dual impact of her business on both food availability and environmental sustainability.

Robinah is determined to move her business forward. “I plan to complete my research, obtain UNBS certification, and collaborate with other businesses in the beef production sector,” she says. By securing the necessary certifications and partnerships, she hopes to expand her market reach and increase her business’s impact on food security. “These steps will allow me to grow my business and contribute even more to solving food insecurity,” she adds with determination. 

Participating in the Innovate For Food Security program has completely reshaped Robinah’s perspective on entrepreneurship in agriculture. “The program has given me the confidence to pursue my business idea and the skills to improve it,” she reflects. She now sees entrepreneurship as a powerful tool for creating sustainable solutions to food security. “You can start small, but with the right mindset and support, it can grow into something that makes a big difference,” she advises.

The KAS Y4P Innovation Fellowship is a unique opportunity for highly qualified individuals who are passionate about research and policy development. Throughout the fellowship, eight selected fellows will engage in rigorous research and produce high-quality policy papers that address critical issues within the innovation landscape. These policy papers are not just academic exercises; they are practical contributions aimed at shaping the future of innovation in Uganda.

Innovations in digital technology are altering the landscape of work, opening new avenues for jobs and business ventures. These transformative changes often have a significant impact on young people’s careers and personal journeys. 

For Patience Patricia Amusolo, a Ugandan native living in Kampala, that moment arrived with the Online Gig Work Program by  ILO PROSPECTS under PROSPECTS Program, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda and implemented by  StartHub Africa.  

Patience’s passion for digital marketing was evident from a young age. Despite being unemployed, she pursued occasional gigs to build her skills and make her mark in the digital realm. Her breakthrough came when a friend shared a LinkedIn post about the Online Gig Work Program, a significant opportunity to advance her digital marketing ambitions. 

Reflecting on her initial excitement, Patience shared, “When I first heard about the Online Gig Work Program, I was thrilled. It was my big break into the world of digital marketing, and I knew it was the chance I had been waiting for.”

Throughout the program, Patience faced challenges, including learning about new topics in digital marketing, technology, and AI tools. With determination and mentor support, she overcame these obstacles and expanded her expertise. “The challenges I faced were daunting at first, but with guidance from my mentors, I navigated them and broadened my knowledge,” she notes. 

The program significantly impacted Patience’s career. She established professional profiles on various paid online platforms, accessing numerous gig opportunities. She no longer waits for work to come to her but actively selects projects that match her skills and interests. 

The program’s influence on her life has been profound. Patience now confidently navigates the digital landscape, applying her skills to diverse projects and sharing her knowledge with her community, including the use of tools like ChatGPT. “Thanks to the program, I now have access to countless gig opportunities and can choose projects that align with my skills and interests. It’s been a game-changer for my career,” she adds.

Thriving in the Digital Age: The Online Gig Work Program’s Impact on Refugee Youth

In today’s rapidly evolving world, digital skills have become a gateway to new opportunities, enabling individuals to transcend their circumstances and shape their own futures. For refugees like Eddy Murumbi, these skills are not just a means to survive but a pathway to thrive.  

Eddy Murumbi grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country plagued by conflict and insecurity. Forced to flee his homeland, Eddy sought refuge in Uganda, eventually settling in Nakivale, one of Africa’s oldest and largest refugee camps. Despite the harsh conditions and limited opportunities, Eddy refused to let his circumstances dictate his future. 

Before discovering the Online Gig Work Program, Eddy was deeply committed to Early Childhood Development (ECD), working as a teacher at Excellent Future Primary School. While this role gave him a sense of purpose, it also came with significant challenges. “Teaching was my passion, but without the proper resources and training, it was hard to provide the quality education I wanted to give,” Eddy recalls. Despite these obstacles, Eddy remained passionate about learning and self-improvement, teaching himself software tools like Photoshop. However, opportunities to further develop and apply these digital skills were scarce in the settlement.

Eddy’s life took a pivotal turn when he learned about the Online Gig Work Program, an initiative by ILO PROSPECTS under PROSPECTS Program, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda and implemented by  StartHub Africa.  

Eddy first heard about the program through social media and messages from friends on WhatsApp. Eager to enhance his skills and explore new opportunities, he applied and was thrilled to be selected. “When I was chosen to participate, it felt like a door to a new world had opened,” Eddy says. The program introduced him to the digital economy, where he learned how to navigate online platforms, craft compelling cover letters, and apply for gigs. These were new skills for Eddy, and the knowledge he gained proved invaluable, allowing him to build a professional online presence and tap into a global market. 

The training sessions were well-structured, providing a supportive learning environment that exceeded Eddy’s expectations. However, he faced challenges, such as limited access to technology and the internet, which made it difficult to practice outside the sessions. Despite these obstacles, Eddy’s determination, coupled with the mentorship provided by the program, helped him build confidence and refine his skills. “The mentorship I received was crucial,” Eddy reflects. “It gave me the confidence to overcome the challenges I faced and helped me see my potential.” 

One of the most impactful outcomes was his introduction to Kolaborate, a platform that connects freelancers with clients seeking specific skills. Through Kolaborate, Eddy secured his first gigs, marking the beginning of his journey as a digital freelancer. His first task—designing a certificate—was a success, boosting his confidence and motivating him to continue pursuing online opportunities. “Landing my first gig was a turning point,” Eddy shares. “It showed me that the skills I had learned could truly make a difference.” 

In addition to freelancing, Eddy’s newly acquired digital skills proved beneficial in his teaching role. He was now able to design professional-looking certificates and reports for his students, a task he had previously struggled with. This improvement enhanced his work and demonstrated practical applications of digital skills in various aspects of life. 

The impact of the Online Gig Work Program on Eddy’s life is profound. As he continues to secure more gigs, he envisions a promising future in the digital economy. His goal is to build a successful online career that not only supports him but also allows him to give back to his community. “I want to use my digital skills to create educational resources for the children in Nakivale,” Eddy explains. “My dream is to enhance their learning experiences; despite the challenges they face.” 

Eddy’s message to others is simple yet profound: “Believe in the possibilities ahead, just like I did. You have the potential to achieve great things, and with the right support, you can showcase your skills to the world.”

Seize the moment: Potential of Online Gig Work programs to transform refugee youth

While the digital technologies are transforming the world of work, they are opening doors for new job and entrepreneurship opportunities. These pivotal moments often reshape lives and careers for the young people.

Meet Nyagasani Enock, a 29-year-old Congolese who embodies this spirit of transformation. With a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Enock has become an inspiration to many after participating in the Online Gig Work Program, a pilot project which offers digital skills training to host and refugee youth in Uganda.

The initiative is being led by  ILO PROSPECTS under PROSPECTS Program, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda and implemented by  StartHub Africa

Enock, who works as a translator at the Norwegian Refugee Council, learned about the training program from a friend and immediately applied to secure his position. “My longstanding passion for technology made me realize that this was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. I always dreamed of using technology to make a significant impact on people’s lives, and saw this program as a pathway to achie that dream,” expressed Enock, explaining his motivation.

During the training, Enock encountered mentors who genuinely cared about his aspirations. They provided guidance, encouraged him to expand his knowledge, and motivated him to succeed. This supportive environment was crucial in helping Enoch stay focused on his goals.

“I faced numerous challenges. There were tough days when developing websites seemed impossible and negotiating or collaborating with others felt daunting. However, with persistence and the support of my mentors, I kept pushing forward,” shared Enock.

The program equipped Enock with various digital skills, including advanced knowledge in technology and artificial intelligence, negotiation and collaboration techniques, problem-solving strategies, and effective communication. These skills not only transformed his professional abilities but also boosted his confidence.

Today, I designs websites for clients in the UK and confidently navigate through the professional collaborations. The Online Gig Work Program didn’t just teach me skills; it allowed me to envision a brighter future. ”

ShareCARD’s inception was rooted in a mission to address a pressing societal need: the lack of access to menstrual hygiene essentials for girls, particularly during the challenging lockdown period. The company’s inaugural initiative, PadShare, emerged as a beacon of hope amidst adversity, serving as a pilot project to democratize access to sanitary pads. Notably, ShareCARD’s groundbreaking efforts garnered acclaim, clinching the top prize at the 1st EU Global Hackathon between 2020 and 2021, a testament to its innovative approach and unwavering dedication.
