Our venture support is practical, hands-on, and tailored to each founder’s needs. No one-size-fits-all training. Instead, we get into the trenches with startups to solve the challenges that matter.

Investment Support: We provide $1,000–$5,000 in initial investment and affordable loans up to $5,000 to help founders test and grow.

1:1 Coaching & Mentorship: Weekly sessions with expert venture associates who guide founders for up to two years. From growth strategy to operations, compliance, and hiring, we cover it all.

Product Development Support: Helping founders refine their products through prototyping, validation, and market testing.

Investor Connections: When startups are ready, we connect them to angel and early-stage investors through our extensive network.

Regional Expansion: We open pathways for startups to scale across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

In short, we become the part-time co-founders every early-stage founder wishes they had, tackling everything outside the day-to-day hustle so they can focus on building their vision.

Zoe Fresh Bites is Transforming Healthy Snacking

Uganda faces a significant issue with food preservation, leading to widespread post-harvest losses. Additionally, with the rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity, there is a growing demand for healthier snack alternatives. Unfortunately, the local market offers very limited options that are sugar-free, gluten-free, and made from fresh, organic ingredients. Zoe Fresh Bites seeks to bridge this gap by providing wholesome, locally produced snacks tailored to people’s dietary needs. 

The Genesis of Zoe Fresh Bites 

Zoe Fresh Bites was founded in October 2024 by Nabulya Sarah and her co-founder, Jonah Mike Ongona, an agriculturalist and environmental scientist. Motivated by their personal experiences with food waste and dietary challenges in their communities, they envisioned a business that adds value to fresh produce while promoting wellness. Together, they set out to create healthy snack options for people with dietary restrictions, children, and those seeking to make better food choices.

Nabulya joined the Innovate for Food Security program to find answers and refine her vision. Initially focused on creating snacks for people with diabetes, her idea evolved significantly during the program. From defining food insecurity to engaging in research and development, the program helped shape Zoe Fresh Bites into a mission-driven business. The ideathons, boot camps, and mentorship sessions introduced essential tools like the Business Model Canvas and emphasized the importance of customer feedback.

Funding, Challenges and Solutions 

With funding from StartHub Africa, Zoe Fresh Bites acquired essential baking equipment, enabling them to develop and test two products. This milestone allowed them to engage 20 initial clients, gather valuable feedback, and improve product shelf life. The funding marked a critical transition from concept to market-ready products and laid the groundwork for scaling production. 

Despite their success, the team faced challenges, particularly with financial planning and production inefficiencies. Early bookkeeping efforts were not detailed enough, leading to overspending. Additionally, product testing led to losses due to unrefined formulas. By categorising expenses, creating departmental budgets, and testing small batches before scaling, they minimised waste and optimised product quality.

Vision for the Future 

Looking ahead, Zoe Fresh Bites aims to scale up production, introduce new healthy snack varieties, and expand its customer base both locally and regionally. They are committed to continuing their journey with customers, co-creating products that meet real nutritional needs while supporting local agriculture and sustainability. 

Zoe Fresh Bites is more than a snack brand, it is a movement toward healthier living and community impact. For Nabulya Sarah, the journey is deeply personal. ‘Who are you learning with?’ she reflects. ‘Growing with those around you is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.’ With a passionate team and a clear vision, Zoe Fresh Bites is well on its way to redefining healthy snacking in Uganda. 

KAS Youth 4 Policy (Y4P) Innovation Fellowship 

Innovation is the engine of economic growth and sustainable development. In Uganda, fostering a thriving innovation ecosystem requires strategic policies that address challenges and create opportunities for startups, investors, and industry players. Recognizing this need, the KAS Y4P Fellowship, implemented in collaboration with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and StartHub Africa, was designed to equip young policy researchers and writers with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s innovation policy landscape. 

This initiative began with a bold vision to empower young Ugandans to shape policies through research and advocacy. Over the past six months, the fellowship provided participants with a structured and immersive experience, culminating in a milestone event where they presented their policy papers before key stakeholders. But the journey to that moment was one of dedication, learning, and collaboration. 

Phase 1: Recruitment and Selection of Fellows  

The first step of the fellowship involved identifying a cohort of passionate and talented individuals eager to explore policymaking in Uganda’s innovation sector. Applicants underwent a rigorous selection process, assessed on their research potential, analytical skills, and commitment to contributing to Uganda’s innovation ecosystem. 

Once selected, the fellows embarked on a transformative journey, gaining access to mentorship, expert-led workshops, and peer learning opportunities.

Phase 2: Research and Mentorship  

The heart of the fellowship lay in the research process. Fellows worked on critical topics affecting Uganda’s innovation landscape, including: 

  • Digital Transformation – Examining the role of technology in Uganda’s economic growth and the policies needed to support digital adoption. 
  • Investment and Venture Capital – Addressing the financial hurdles startups face and exploring how venture capital can be more accessible. 
  • AI Regulation – Assessing the current landscape of artificial intelligence and proposing regulatory frameworks to encourage ethical and sustainable AI development. 
  • Financial Constraints for Startups – Identifying challenges entrepreneurs face in securing funding and proposing solutions to foster a more supportive financing environment. 
  • Startup Financing and Ecosystem Development – Analyzing how Uganda can create a robust and sustainable startup ecosystem through policy interventions. 

Throughout the fellowship, participants were guided by industry experts and policymakers who provided valuable insights, helping them refine their research and develop actionable policy recommendations. 

Phase 3: Policy Writing and Refinement  

As their research took shape, the fellows engaged in multiple feedback sessions to ensure their policy papers were impactful, well-structured, and backed by solid evidence. They participated in writing workshops, where they learned how to craft compelling policy arguments, present data effectively, and align their recommendations with real-world policy needs. 

By the end of this phase, each fellow had developed a policy paper that provided actionable insights into Uganda’s innovation ecosystem. These papers were designed to highlight challenges and propose viable solutions that could inform future policymaking. 

Phase 4: The Fellowship Graduation Event  

The culmination of this journey was the KAS Y4P Fellowship graduation Event, held on February 27, 2025, at the StartHub Africa office in Bukoto. This event served as a platform for the fellows to showcase their work and engage with key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and innovation experts. 

The KAS Y4P Fellowship was a movement toward evidence-based innovation policymaking in Uganda. As these policy papers circulate among stakeholders, they have the potential to influence real change in Uganda’s innovation ecosystem. 

Empowering Retailers and Market Vendors

In partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), StartHub Africa is proud to have completed an impactful initiative, empowering 138 retailers and market vendors in Nakivale’s New Congo and Rubondo markets, as well as the Oruchinga settlement. This transformative journey focused on equipping these entrepreneurs with essential business skills to enhance their financial management and boost their businesses. 

At the heart of the training was the importance of bookkeeping. By mastering this foundational skill, participants are now equipped to make data-driven decisions and take control of their financial futures. But we didn’t stop there. The program also introduced participants to innovative sales and marketing strategies, enabling them to attract more customers, increase their revenues, and confidently grow their ventures.

A highlight of the training was the introduction of the sales funnel, a game-changing concept that showed vendors how to turn potential customers into loyal advocates. Alongside this, participants learned savings and budgeting techniques, providing them with tools to manage their earnings, reinvest in their businesses, and build a sustainable future. 

The program’s real breakthroughs came during personalized one-on-one sessions, where participants received tailored support to refine their bookkeeping practices and develop actionable plans to elevate their businesses. 

To celebrate these achievements, we honoured four exceptional participants with a 1.5M UGX grant and a plaque for their dedication. Additionally, three runners-up were awarded 1M UGX each to support their business growth. 

This program has gone beyond teaching skills—it has sparked a ripple effect of change, equipping market vendors to build stronger, more sustainable businesses.  

The future looks bright for Nakivale and Oruchinga, and this is just the beginning.

Bridging Gaps: The Online Gig Work Program’s Impact on Nationals and Refugee Youths 

Innovations in digital technology are altering the landscape of work, opening new avenues for jobs and business ventures. These transformative changes often have a significant impact on young people’s careers and personal journeys. 

For Patience Patricia Amusolo, a Ugandan native living in Kampala, that moment arrived with the Online Gig Work Program by  ILO PROSPECTS under PROSPECTS Program, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda and implemented by  StartHub Africa.  

Patience’s passion for digital marketing was evident from a young age. Despite being unemployed, she pursued occasional gigs to build her skills and make her mark in the digital realm. Her breakthrough came when a friend shared a LinkedIn post about the Online Gig Work Program, a significant opportunity to advance her digital marketing ambitions. 

Reflecting on her initial excitement, Patience shared, “When I first heard about the Online Gig Work Program, I was thrilled. It was my big break into the world of digital marketing, and I knew it was the chance I had been waiting for.”

Throughout the program, Patience faced challenges, including learning about new topics in digital marketing, technology, and AI tools. With determination and mentor support, she overcame these obstacles and expanded her expertise. “The challenges I faced were daunting at first, but with guidance from my mentors, I navigated them and broadened my knowledge,” she notes. 

The program significantly impacted Patience’s career. She established professional profiles on various paid online platforms, accessing numerous gig opportunities. She no longer waits for work to come to her but actively selects projects that match her skills and interests. 

The program’s influence on her life has been profound. Patience now confidently navigates the digital landscape, applying her skills to diverse projects and sharing her knowledge with her community, including the use of tools like ChatGPT. “Thanks to the program, I now have access to countless gig opportunities and can choose projects that align with my skills and interests. It’s been a game-changer for my career,” she adds.

Her story serves as a powerful reminder of how embracing opportunities and believing in oneself can unlock endless possibilities.

Unveiling Success: Ochuka Richard’s Journey with Empower YOU 

Delve into the compelling journey of Ochuka Richard, an innovative entrepreneur from Lira City whose resilience, creativity, and transformative spirit have propelled him to remarkable success. A committed participant in the Empower YOU Program https://starthubafrica.org/empoweryou led by StartHub Africa, Ochuka’s story exemplifies the profound influence of strategic mentorship and unwavering determination in the business arena 

Ochuka’s enterprise focuses on the agricultural value chain and Agri-training, adding value to products, processing posho flour, and supporting smallholder farmers. By packing posho in 1kg bags and selling at a competitive rate of 1800 shillings, Ochuka’s company stands out in the market where prices range from 2000 to 3000 shillings. His unique business model empowers farmers through training, seed provision, and purchasing their maize grain, creating a sustainable supply chain.

The inspiration behind Ochuka’s venture arose from observing the high unemployment rates among youth in his community. Unable to secure a job himself, he ventured into agriculture, starting with sorghum farming. His initial success, generating 28 million shillings, enabled him to establish his company in 2018. His goal is to provide employment opportunities, particularly for those who cannot create their own jobs, thereby fostering community growth and economic development.

Their insights into business management highlighted his need for personal growth and training, despite being a trainer himself. Since joining the program, he has gained invaluable knowledge that he now shares with his community and staff.

In the past six months, Ochuka has implemented critical business practices such as record keeping, previously neglected, which led to financial losses due to lack of oversight. The program emphasized tracking profits and losses, significantly improving his business operations. Additionally, he gained insights into effective branding, enhancing customer awareness and recognition of his business. 

Looking ahead, Ochuka envisions his business achieving 80% of its goals within the next five years. With a fully functional factory and the daily implementation of acquired knowledge, he is confident in his company’s future success. Key lessons from the program include maximizing expenses, setting targets, and strategic goal setting.

At its core lies a commitment to equipping youths with the essential skills needed to thrive in the business world. Let’s delve into the story of Joshua Opakrwot, a determined youth whose journey embodies the impact of Empower You. 

Joshua Opakrwot, a recent graduate from Good Samaritan High School in Nansana, Kampala, found himself at a crossroad during his vacation year. Faced with the need to become self-reliant, Joshua embarked on a quest to turn his aspirations into reality. Inspired by a desire to venture into entrepreneurship, Joshua sought guidance from a friend involved in shoe manufacturing.

Through determination and a thirst for knowledge, Joshua immersed himself in the art of shoemaking under the mentorship of his friend. However, his entrepreneurial journey truly took flight when he discovered Empower YOU, a program tailored to empower young business minds like his own. Introduced to the program by his mentor, Joshua seized the opportunity to expand his skill set and enhance his business acumen. 

What distinguishes Empower YOU is its focus on providing practical training in business management, a crucial aspect often overlooked in traditional education. Despite not having prior exposure to business subjects, Joshua recognized the significance of mastering financial management, savings, and record-keeping. These newfound skills not only fortified his current endeavors but also ignited a vision for the future.

Seeds of Innovation: Benedict’s Experience in the Innovate for Food Security Program

Benedict Muwanguzi, a third-year student at Makerere University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in food science and technology, reflected on his interactive experience with the Innovate for Food Security program by StartHub Africa. He mentioned being provided with various case studies and adopting a hands-on approach to learning, which he found more effective than passive listening. 

His motivation to participate stemmed from both a friend’s referral and his interest in entrepreneurship and business. Benedict emphasized the interconnectedness of climate change, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, noting their mutual influence on one another and their critical roles in Uganda’s economy.

Throughout the program, Benedict acquired specific knowledge and skills, including idea thinking methodology, the design thinking process, idea canvas creation, and business idea generation. He highlighted the significance of the design thinking process in problem-solving and product development, particularly in addressing agricultural challenges like food wastage and insecurity. 

Applying these newfound skills, Benedict and his team undertook innovative ventures, such as the 50,000shs challenge, where they successfully turned a small investment into profits within four hours by selling salads to university students. 

Benedict expressed his belief in the potential of youth to drive change in food security through education, improved agricultural practices, and initiatives to mitigate food waste. He also recognized barriers to youth involvement in agriculture, such as a preference for white-collar jobs, suggesting that education and outreach programs could help overcome these barriers.

Introducing the The Investment Guide Uganda

StartHub Africa is delighted and proud to be part of the launch of the #InvestmentGuideUG. The Investment Guide will help entrepreneurs in Uganda get to the next level by providing them with detailed information about funding and investment.

As part of the campaign to launch the Investment Guide in Uganda, StartHub Africa will be sharing snippets that highlight the core contents and potential of the guide.

The investment Guide Uganda now joins the several other country-specific guides already created for Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, Ethiopia, and the Ivory Coast respectively.

The Investment Guide Africa is implemented by the Tech-Entrepreneurship Initiative Make-IT in Africa, In cooperation with AlliedCrowds, and the GIZ Business Scouts for Development.

StartHub Africa is the contracted consultant implementing the launch event for the Investment Guide Uganda. StartHub Africa is an entrepreneurship support organization in Uganda supporting university students and early-stage startups to start and grow innovative and scalable businesses across Africa.
